PROFILE CHARACTERISTICS OF BORE WELL AND NON BORE WELL FARMERS IN EASTREN DRY ZONE OF KARNATAKA

Abstract

A large population in India is dependent on agriculture. But, more number of farmers in various parts of the country depends on rainfed. Surface water provides irrigation to the extent of 45 percent of the total irrigation and ground water account for 55 per cent. The total annual utilizable groundwater resource of the country is around 43.19 M.h.m. Out of this, over 7.09 M.h.m (16.4 %) is used for domestic, industrial and other uses. The groundwater available for irrigations is around 36.08 M.h.m. Today, there are more than 27 million well and bore wells operating in different parts of India. With respect to personal characteristics of farmers in bore well irrigation, it was found that 44.11 per cent farmers were old age, they belongs to small family (32.22 %), had medium farming experience (50.00 %) and belongs to nuclear family (88.89 %). In case of non bore well condition, 42.22 of them belongs to old age. 46.67 per cent belongs to small family, 50.00 per cent were had low farming experience and 75.56 per cent were nuclear family. It was observed that, among psychological characteristics of bore well irrigation, nearly half of the farmers (56.67 %) had high level of risk orientation, about 35.56 per cent had medium level of economic motivation, had high management orientation (40.00 %), scientific orientation (90.00 %), medium level of achievement motivation (46.67 %), and level of aspiration (35.56 %). In non bore well condition, 33.67 per cent of farmers had medium level of risk orientation, economic motivation (36.67 %), management orientation (60.00 %), low level of scientific orientation (94.40 %), medium achievement motivation (74.44 %) and level of aspiration (40.00 %).
